Valentine’s Day: Great gift bags!

valentines bags

Valentine’s Day is just a few days away and if your children are like mine we have two needs for cute bags.  First, they make great gift bags for the teacher’s gifts for Valentine’s Day and they also are perfect for holding all those sweet treats and cards from the Valentine’s Day party at school or home.    I usually try to put a few treats in there for the teachers and then some gifts and the girls handmade cards.

Here’s how to make your own Valentine’s Day Gift Bags

You will need:

1 white bag with handles (dollar store has them in a 3 pk for $1.00)

Assorted colored papers (we used some scrapbook papers)

Different styles scissors (nice to have but not essential

Glue (glue dots or a glue gun would be helpful but not essential)

Pink or red pipe cleaners (optional)

Googly eyes

And a great imagination.

With these youngest daughter decided to do a “Butterfly Heart” since butterflies are some of her favorite things.  Cut out a heart, circles, another heart or then again any shape for the mouth, and some wings.  We liked layering to give it more texture and depth (some of these papers were textured.

Expand language skills by sharing what kids around the world call their grandparents and how to say grandma and grandpa in sign language.

Even in your own classroom or family, children will have a variety of names for their grandmothers from grandma or granny to nana or mimi. Grandfathers might be called grandpa, granddad, papa or big daddy. Kids love hearing words from other languages.

Explore these names for grandmothers and grandfathers around the world.

Obasaan and Ojiisan in Japanese

Abuelita and Abuelito in Spanish

Mormor (mother of the mother) and Farmor (mother of the father) or Morfar (father of the mother) and Farfar (father of the father) in Swedish

Oma and Opa in Dutch

Mamy and Papy (pronounced mummy and puppy) in French

Nonna and Nonno in Italian

Learn to say grandmother and grandfather in American sign language.

“The sign for “grandma” or “grandmother” is made by touching your chin with the thumb of your right hand, as when signing “mother.” The right hand should be open. Now, move your hand forward in two small arches.”

“The sign for “grandfather” is made by touching your forehead with the thumb of your dominant hand, the same as when signing “father”. The hand should be open. Now, move your hand forward in two small arches.”

These “two small arches” like just going down (from the chin or forehead) and up with your hand as if it is making a little bounce.

Beach theme lesson plans: center ideas & great books

Using beach theme lesson plans is a fun way to reinforce the letter and sound of “B” with preschoolers.  Whether in a preschool or home setting there are many creative and inexpensive ways to encourage learning and exploratory play with through a beach theme.

Centers such as kitchen and housekeeping areas, blocks, dress up, writing, play dough and others are proven to promote social, language and fine motor development through play.  However, after a while when preschoolers have mastered a center’s opportunities, kids get bored.  By adding new items to each center with each lesson plan theme change, teachers and parents can keep the centers fresh and keep the learning going.

Here are some easy ideas for making learning “a day at the beach” for preschoolers.

Beach Theme Center Time Ideas:

1.  Add seashells to your play dough table and point out the fossil-like patterns they can make.

2.  Also add seashells to your sand box to encourage new playtime activities and conversations.

3.  Add beach post cards to your writing center where preschoolers can practice signing their names.  No beach post cards on hand?  Let them create their own with beach stickers and index cards.

4.  Add beach towels, a picnic basket and paper and plastic products to the kitchen and housekeeping area so that little cooks and can create beach picnics.

5.  Add sun hats, sunglasses, beach cover ups and leis to the dress up center for beach theme fun.
