The Big Book of Girl Stuff
By Bart King, Illustrations by Jennifer Kalis, Gibbs Smith, Publisher, 2006
We bought the Big Book of Girl Stuff for our nine year old. It was blurbed as the “Hip Handbook for Girls” and girl, does it deliver.
This book is so slick it even has secret covers so girls can carry it with them all the time without anyone knowing how they got so hip. The hot pink paper cover flips over to reveal a composition notebook. Take the paper cover off and tah dah…it says “Chemistry.” I love it!
Some of the Topics Explored in the Big Book of Girl Stuff

How could Bart King possibly know so much about being girly?
The Big Book of Girl Stuff was written along with his five sisters and input from many other girls and young women. Also, he’s been teaching middle school for fifteen years.
King has also written one for girls, The Big Book of Boy Stuff. I haven’t checked it out yet but I certainly will when my son is older.
Parenting magazine raved that The Big Book of Girl Stuff is a “must-have for preteen girls.” I say this is a book girls will read.
It has fun history tidbits too. How did Alexander Graham Bell propose to his wife? Guess what? It wasn’t by phone. He sent a telegram.
My daughter loves this book. I highly recommend it as a fun gift for girls ages 8-14. It’s girly, hip and smart.
